As the Kentucky Basketball
roster and coaching staff begin to focus on the 2026-27 season, head coach Mark Pope has turned his attention toward recruiting the class of 2027 and scheduling visits with some of the nation’s top prospects.Many Kentucky fans are hoping Pope can reel in multiple big fish in the 2027 class after landing 5-star recruit Ryan Hampton. That is something the Wildcats were unable to do in the 2026 recruiting class when Pope pursued the nation’s No. 1 overall player, 5-star small
forward Tyran Stokes, but ultimately fell short.
Now, Pope is looking to have better results in the 2027 class.
After the first live period of the spring, Kentucky offered 5-star center Darius Wabbington, who was expected to visit Lexington at some point this fall.
The 6-foot-11, 245-pound center from Sunnyslope in Phoenix, Arizona, is ranked as a top-15 overall prospect, the No. 3 center in the country and the No. 4 overall player in Arizona, according to the 247 Sports Composite.
Wabbington was viewed as a potential fit for the way Pope runs his offense, particularly because of his size and skill set.
In June, Wabbington released a list of his top schools, including Arizona, Indiana, Louisville, North Carolina, and Texas.
He also had three official visits scheduled for the fall, beginning with Louisville from Sept. 11-13, followed by Arizona from Sept. 25-27 and Texas from Oct. 9-11.
A potential visit to Kentucky was in the works although a date was never officially announced, but, now it appears that visit will not happen.
Instead, Wabbington has replaced the potential Kentucky visit with a trip to Illinois from Oct. 23-25. He will then visit North Carolina from Oct. 30-Nov. 1 and Indiana from Sept. 3-5, according to Brandon Jenkins of 247 Sports.
While losing out on a visit from a player of Wabbington’s caliber is certainly notable, Kentucky’s 2027 recruiting board remains loaded with talent.
Kentucky has currently offered 22 scholarships in the 2027 class, which includes Hampton, who is already committed to Kentucky.
