We’re not even a week into the new year but it is becoming more apparent that one of the central figures of the January transfer window rumor cycle is going to be a player we’re already quite familjar
with.
Welcome back to the conversation, Fred.
After hearing last week that Juventus are weighing up a January move for former winger Federico Chiesa, things look to have progressed to the point where the Bianconeri front office has made contact with Liverpool regarding a move for the Italian attacker, according to Fabrizio Romano on Monday. Chiesa, who signed with Liverpool in the summer of 2024 after being frozen out of the squad by Thiago Motta and Cristiano Giuntoli, is reportedly open to making a Juventus return as he looks for more playing time in the second half of the 2025-26 season (and beyond). Juve are reportedly keen to get a deal for Chiesa done, with Romano saying they want to add at least one attacking player during the winter transfer window this month. By all accounts, Juve appear interested in potentially signing Chiesa on loan with a potential option to buy.
Sky Italia, however (and rather unsurprisingly), has reported that Liverpool are much more keen on a permanent deal rather than loaning Chiesa out to Juventus (or another club) with there being a potential buy option attached as well.
So, with all of this being said, it looks like it’s time to take the Chiesa return rumors a little more seriously.
There is a catch with all of this, though — Liverpool have been battling injuries in attack all season and currently have their biggest name in attack, Mo Salah, out on international duty with Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations. Therefore, a potential move for Chiesa could very well only be possible later on in the month once Salah returns from AFCON. (Egypt are currently in the quarterfinals of the tournament, which pushes back a Salah return back at least a few more days.)
But regardless of when Chiesa would be able to arrive, Juventus do appear to be pushing to try and make it happen — which is something that didn’t really seem like even the smallest of possibilities even a couple of weeks ago.
Chiesa has been linked with a return to Serie A over the last few months dating back to the summer when his future at Liverpool was in question. But Juve had never been one of those clubs that were thinking about bringing the former budding star of the Italian national team prior to his major knee injury in January 2022. Italian clubs like Napoli and Roma had been the main names thrown out there as the ones who would want to try and bring Chiesa back to Serie A after his Premier League experience, but now it looks like Juventus are the main Italian name being linked with him.
And it appears that this is going to be something we hear plenty about over the next couple of weeks, too.
