The World Cup is a tournament that can be won by riding a hot streak or with a slow, steady build that peaks in the final.
Coaching, of course, comes into play in a massive way. Personnel decisions, formations, tactics, rotations…they are all heavily scrutinized because, well, a nation is watching. So, let’s play a game — which club manager do you think would excel on the international stage? Let’s take a look at a few options.
- Vincent Kompany, Bayern Munich: A relationship builder and good communicator, Kompany could rally the boys in this kind of format.
- Mikel Arteta, Arsenal: Could he will a team to muck it up enough to capture a trophy?
- Kieran McKenna, Ipswich Town. McKenna’s detailed preparation and ability to rapidly build team cohesion feel perfectly suited for tournament football.
- Hansi Flick, FC Barcelona: Ah well, 2022 might have told us enough about Flick’s ability on the international stage (which does not take away from his greatness as a club manager). If he got another turn, though, who knows?
- Luis Enrique, Paris Saint-Germain: He just seems to know how to get the job done.
- Unai Emery, Aston Villa: Somehow, some way he can push teams to get the most out of themselves (even if it is ugly).
- Tonda Eckert, Southampton FC: Will literally do anything to win. (We kid, we kid)
Tell us who you think might work on the international stage — and remember,
you are not limited to this list above.
