Days after middleweight contender Vito Mielnicki Jr joined forces with Matchroom Boxing, Keith Idec reports that he’ll meet recent title challenger Austin “Ammo” Williams on September 4th in “White Magic’s” familiar stomping grounds of Newark, New Jersey.
Mielnicki (23-1, 13 KO) stands unbeaten in his last 16 fights, the lone blemish a majority draw against Connor Coyle that was later overturned to a no contest when Coyle failed a drug test. Despite lacking a signature win, he sits at no. 2 in the WBO
rankings, meaning a win here could put him in position for a title shot once the logjam caused by Janibek Alimkhanuly’s suspension clears up.
Williams (20-2, 13 KO) is Mielnicki’s toughest foe to date on paper, but finds himself in a rough spot after once again falling well short in a major bout. Despite rebounding nicely with four straight wins following a destructive loss to Hamzah Sheeraz, Williams had little to offer Carlos Adames in last March’s title shot, hitting the deck early and absorbing quite a bit of punishment in an admirably gutsy effort.
Just because he’s not champ material doesn’t mean he’s not a potential landmine for Mielnicki, though. I like the matchmaking here; we’ll let you know when and if it becomes official.
