Newcastle United is reportedly laying the groundwork for another potential midfield signing as uncertainty continues to surround Bruno Guimaraes’ future, following Tottenham’s rejection of the Magpies’ offer for Lucas Bergvall.
While the Magpies remain adamant that their captain is not for sale despite Arsenal’s interest, a new report claims the club is already exploring alternatives should things change later in the transfer window.
According to FootballTransfers, Newcastle has held talks with representatives
of Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Hugo Larsson, with Manchester United also making initial contact over the Sweden international.
“Manchester United and Newcastle have both held talks with representatives of Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Hugo Larsson as the race for the gifted young midfielder picks up pace, FootballTransfers have been told,” the report says.
For now, no Premier League club has submitted an official offer for Larsson, but both are considering a possible move for the 22-year-old, who is reportedly open to leaving Frankfurt this summer. The Bundesliga side is reportedly demanding around €50 million for Larsson, who remains under contract until 2029 after joining the Bundesliga club from Malmo in 2023, even though the midfielder has a much lower market value of €28 million.
According to FootballTransfers, Newcastle is eager to avoid another disappointment in the market after missing out on several priority targets over the past year, including Johan Manzambi, who instead joined Aston Villa, and a likely whiff on Tottenham’s Bergvall.
Bundesliga expert Tom Weber, describing Larsson’s game in the same report, believes that the player is ready for the next step in his career despite an inconsistent season in Germany.
“Larsson is planning to take the next step in his career this summer,” Weber told FootballTransfers, adding that the midfielder’s campaign was affected by Frankfurt’s struggles rather than a lack of ability.
As things stand, and if the report is correct, then discussions between clubs and the player remain at a very early stage, with Newcastle yet to open formal negotiations.
