The New England Patriots did not have many bright moments during their Super Bowl loss to the Seattle Seahawks. However, one bright spot that helped prevent the Seahawks victory from being an even worse blowout was cornerback, Christian Gonzalez. For example, Gonzalez single-handedly prevented likely long touchdowns to both Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Rashid Shaheed.
Over his first few years in the league, Gonzalez has clearly proven himself to be one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL. This is why he has been
at the center of contract extension talks, much like Devon Witherspoon was earlier this summer. Witherspoon (who has the same agent as Gonzalez) was able to sign a long-term extension, making himself the highest paid cornerback in NFL history. By virtue of timing (and Robert Kraft’s own statement), Gonzalez is widely expected to surpass that number.
However, negotiations between Gonzalez and the Patriots do not seem to be going so great. It has gotten to the point where Gonzalez has been coy about his availability to play in week one against the Seahawks. When asked if he will play on Wednesday night against Seattle, Gonzalez responded, “I’m focused on today.”
Gonzalez could very well end up playing for the Patriots in Week 1. However, this response to a fairly simple question is not the best message New England fans want to hear entering their 2026 season. In the event that Gonzalez does not suit up against Seattle, that will be a huge blow to the Mike Vrabel led defense. Gonzalez’s status will definitely be one for Seahawks fans to keep on eye on.
