After a couple blowout losses, the Yankees returned the favor last night, as they handled the Tigers in the series finale, led by a couple Aaron Judge homers. Now, they’re set to face a another test, this one with even bigger potential consequences for the standings.
Starting tonight, the Yankees will face off against the Red Sox, with not only rivalry bragging rights, but playoff positioning on the line. The Yankees have struggled with Boston this season, but a couple wins this weekend would help
us forget all about that. The Bombers currently lead the Red Sox by a half-game in the Wild Card standings. With Toronto still three games up in the AL East, this could very well be a future Wild Card Series matchup, and since Boston has the tiebreaker with New York, the onus will be on the Yanks to finish ahead of them to ensure that they don’t have to return to Fenway for a playoff matchup.
Tonight in the opener, Luis Gil will take the mound for the Bombers. Gil has been pretty good ever since he returned from the IL with a stinker, and he’s coming off of his best start of the year after going six innings of one-run ball against Toronto. If he can keep his walks under control, he can hopefully keep that going tonight.
Lucas Giolito is going for Boston, and he too has been very good lately, although the Yankees did knock him out early a couple weeks ago. Since then he’s going eight shutout against the Orioles and pitched six innings against the Pirates allowing just one run, but his latest start saw him only go five innings with four runs (two earned) to his name against Arizona. He has a 3.38 ERA and 4.18 FIP over 130.1 innings in his first season post-Tommy John surgery.
We hope that you’ll come join us in the game thread for tonight’s action. Here’s everything you need to know about how to watch or listen:
