The writing was all over the wall. An up-and-coming side in the relegation zone set to face a Chelsea team in the very first steps of figuring out how they will look like under a new manager.
Jarrod Bowen’s
cross-turned-goal was the kind of play that makes you say “this looks like a disaster-in-waiting”. Crysencio Summerville’s score to double their lead right after we registered our third shot at goal with more than 75% ball retention didn’t do much to dissuade us from the feeling of impending doom.
We didn’t need change, but changes. Liam Rosenior rose to the occasion with a triple half-time substitution to turn things around and two of his introductions, Wesley Fofana and João Pedro, combined to pull one back for us at the start of the second half.
Marc Cucurella, the third sub, also made an impact by giving the accurate push in a play where Liam Delap had just hit the crossbar with a header. And they continued to help Chelsea push forward, as a third goal looked very possible against a West Ham team now looking in the face of impending doom.
They were proven correct when in added time Enzo Fernández got Chelsea the winning goal. Thus putting an end to a short West Ham winning streak, and marking the beginning of something very interesting taking place at Stamford Bridge.
Carefree!
- Plenty of rotation today.
- If Alejandro Garnacho wants to succeed at this level, his work rate shouldn’t be left at running forward.
- Subs making a difference.
- João Pedro bringing the much needed Diego Costa energy to our centre-forward position.
- Next up: Arsenal in the League Cup.
- KTBFFH!
