What is the story about?

Newcastle United remains alive in the Carabao Cup after surviving a difficult third-round trip to Millwall, with Matthias Jaissle’s side now three victories away from returning to the competition’s final.

The fourth-round draw has handed Newcastle another away assignment, this time against Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. The tie will be played during the week beginning Monday, Oct. 26, although the exact date and kickoff time have yet to be confirmed.

Newcastle reached the last 16 through Joe Willock’s late winner at The Den, while Everton progressed with a similarly narrow result. Carlos Alcaraz scored in the 80th minute as David Moyes’ side defeated Wolves 1-0.

The draw also creates an unusual stretch in Newcastle’s schedule, as Jaissle’s team will visit Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday, Oct. 25 before traveling to Merseyside for the cup tie. Newcastle then hosts Everton at St James’ Park on Monday, Nov. 2, meaning the clubs will meet twice in quick succession.

Everton has a difficult schedule of its own immediately beforehand, traveling to Arsenal on Saturday, Oct. 24, which might force Moyes into fully focusing on earning a result against the Magpies, knowing how hard the matchup against the Gunners might be.

Despite being regular Premier League opponents, Newcastle and Everton have not met in a cup competition since November 2002. Their League Cup third-round meeting at St James’ Park finished 3-3 after extra time before Everton advanced 3-2 on penalties. Kieron Dyer scored twice for Newcastle that night.

Newcastle has a better FA Cup memory against Everton, winning 4-1 in the 1999 quarterfinals through goals from Temuri Ketsbaia, Georgios Georgiadis and Alan Shearer.
