Heidenheim almost pulled off the unthinkable — taking down Bayern Munich at home in the Bundesliga.
However, a late, lucky goal for Bayern Munich saw the Bavarians pull out a 3-3 draw in the game’s waning moments and Heidenheim was left to pick up the piece of a lost opportunity.
“We would have signed up for the point before the match. We turned in a superb performance, everything we set out to do worked out. Of course Bayern might not have been fully focused between the two matches against PSG. We kept
our hopes alive. Of course it’s very bitter to concede the equalizer with the last attack. It’s incredibly painful, but who knows what that point might be worth,” said Heidenheim defender Patrick Mainka (as captured by FCBayern.com).
Defender Marnon Busch also did not love losing the late lead, but was willing to take the point and get out of the Allianz Arena.
“To turn in a display like this and concede the equalizer in the last second is bitter. But we’ll take the point. Very few people thought we had a chance here. I’m incredibly proud of the team. We’ll take that and build on it in the next few weeks,” Busch said.
