Teofimo Lopez says he does have a verbal agreement in place to challenge Rolly Romero for Romero’s WBA welterweight title.
Asked in an appearance on DAZN this evening if the talk was true, Teofimo was, as usual, a bit all over the place, but did confirm that they have at least verbally agreed, though no deal is in place just yet.
“I’ve been, like, living under a rock, because I haven’t heard anything like that,” Teofimo said. “But apparently, I’m told that we verbally agreed on a fight, and now we’re
just getting the details between my legal team and obviously Rolly Romero.”
Lopez (22-2, 13 KO) has won world titles at 135 and 140, and says he wouldn’t have it any other way than going straight after a belt in his move to 147.
“I think, realistically, I wouldn’t be known as ‘The Takeover’ without taking over the division,” he said. “I will be fighting at 147, and we fight the best, that’s who they are. I’m gonna stick to it. We’ve verbally agreed to it, and the rest is paperwork.”
Asked if he would also be looking to target the likes of WBC titleholder Ryan Garcia and WBO titleholder Devin Haney, Lopez stayed on the same track.
“That’s what we need for the sport. We need to make the fights happen. No more talking on Twitter, no more of this stuff, we just need to make the fights happen already. I’m an old school, traditional guy. Win, lose, or draw, I’m gonna give you guys the best fights no matter what.”
Lopez, 28, is coming off of a one-sided loss to Shakur Stevenson in January. Romero hasn’t fought since upsetting Ryan Garcia in May 2025.
Rumors have had Rolly vs Teofimo happening in August, though that could change.
