Die Folgen: Bayern’s 5-0 win over Hamburg (Bavarian Football Works)
Bayern Munich was back in Bundesliga action at the Allianz Arena vs. Hamburger SV and absolutely routed the visitors.
The Bavarians notched a thoroughly dominant 5-0 victory over Der Dino, who was basically run off the field in the first half. Let’s dive into the details…here are some quick hitters on the big win for Bayern Munich:
- As always, let’s begin with a look at the starting XI:
- No major surprises in the lineup. With Vincent Kompany expected to start Leon Goretzka on Wednesday vs. Chelsea, it was not wholly shocking to see him on the bench.
- It did not take long for Bayern Munich to get going as Konrad Laimer found Serge Gnabry in the 3rd minute. Bayern Munich was clearly a class above of Hamburg and Gnabry rifled that shot home.
- Just six minutes later, Aleksandar Pavlović snuck in with a nifty goal of his own and the rout was on. Harry Kane had the assist.
- Hamburg was completely outmatched and outclassed. You could see how the second goal just took the wind out of Der Dino.
- In the 13th minute, Michael Olise had a golden opportunity, but did not get a good piece of his attempt as it was saved. Even with the weak power, it still took a great save from Daniel Heuer Fernandes to make the stop.
- A handball call in the box would set up Kane for an attempt, which the Englishman promptly buried in the 26th minute after a VAR decision. Even with Heuer Fernandes guessing the right way, Kane had too much velocity on his attempt and also perfect placement.
- Yup, it was a free-for-all. In the 29th minute, a long-range attempt from Luis Díaz deflected off of a Hamburg defender and evaded Heuer Fernandes for another goal. What a freaking nightmare of a start for Der Dino.
- Bayern Munich was just winning every aspect of the match and was unwilling to give an inch.
- After picking up a first half yellow card, Dayot Upamecano hit the bench for the second half. Gnabry did as well and Raphaël Guerreiro and Nicolas Jackson each hit the pitch. Josip Stanišić slid in to play center-back when Upamecano left the match.
- As expected, Bayern Munich had a little less juice after the break. Unfortunately, a medical emergency in the stands likely zapped some of the fervor from the fans as well.
- It was somewhat curious to see Kompany keep Olise on the pitch after halftime given how much mileage the winger has been racking up. With Lennart Karl available, some extra minutes for the youngster — especially during a busy week — would have been welcomed.
- Very (way too ) early impression: It might be tough for Kane and Jackson to play together. Neither guy is exactly an activity merchant.
- Kane would get his second goal of the match in the 62nd minute after a feed from Olise and a brilliant touch.
- At that point, Kompany brought on Karl and Tom Bischof, which was awesome to see minus the fact that Bischof had to come on for an injured Guerreiro. Karl ripped a great shot off that was saved just a few minutes after coming on. How do you not love that kid’s mentality?
- Hamburg really should have just put in Daniel Peretz.
- Conversely, Kimmich should not have been in the match as long as he was. This is a LONG season and there was no reason to have him play that much. Yes, the Guerreiro injury complicated things a bit, but Kimmich needs a rest at some point.
- Yes, that is extreme nitpicking, but a fresh Kimmich next spring could be lethal. A worn out Kimmich could mean the end of Bayern Munich’s Champions League hopes.
- Amazingly, Kimmich stayed on and it was Díaz, who left on Bayern Munich’s final sub. Sacha Boey entered the match.
- Jackson did not look overly comfortable, which was to be expected. It got better for him when Kane left the game, but it might take some time for him to get used to Bayern Munich’s style of play and coexisting with Kane if the two are truly going to play together at times.
- I’ll say it again…I hated seeing Olise and Kimmich play the full 90 minutes. There was no reason for both of them to do that.
- Overall, Bayern Munich was sensational in the first half and very good in the second half. It was the kind of win you like to see just ahead of a key Champions League showdown. Certainly, Chelsea will provide a much more stiff challenge than Hamburg, but it was still good to see Bayern Munich take care of business in such an authoritative way.

Arsenal, Liverpool eyeing Stiller (ESPN)
Both Arsenal and Liverpool are keeping a close on VfB Stuttgart midfielder and Germany international Angelo Stiller:
Arsenal and Liverpool look set to do battle and beat Manchester United and Real Madrid for the signing of VfB Stuttgart midfielder Angelo Stiller, according to TEAMtalk. Both the Gunners and the Merseysiders are among a number of clubs across Europe chasing the 24-year-old, who has a release clause of £34.6m. Stiller came through the Bayern Munich academy before more recently finding consistent form in the Bundesliga with Stuttgart. Stiller is contracted until 2027 but could be available in January, though a move next summer appears more likely. Manchester United bid for Stiller at the end of the summer transfer window, but their offer was rejected.
Díaz talks why he wanted Bayern move (Bundesliga.com via @iMiaSanMia)
Luis Díaz said that one of the drivers for his desire to move to Bayern Munich was the expectations that the club puts on itself each and every season.
“What attracted me was Bayern’s expectations, because it’s no secret that they’re a very big club. I already knew a lot about what Bayern are about. They came for me, they believed in me. That was a really important point in choosing them and joining,” said Díaz. “It’s a club with a huge amount of history, a club that’s won everything at international level. It’s a very big challenge for me to be part of such a big club. I’m going to try and give my all to keep making history, keep winning titles, to win important things.
“That’s always what people remember, what stays in the memories of us footballers. I’m very happy to be part of this great club. Hopefully we’ll keep going like this. We’ve started really well. We’re going to try and keep working as we are to have a great start to the season.”

Juve to make move for Zirkzee? (ESPN)
There is nothing wrong with just having a nice football career without being a key player at a big club. That might be what former Bayern Munich striker Joshua Zirkzee should focus on.
In the midst of a disastrous stint with Manchester United, Zirkzee is on the trading block and Juventus seems to want him. Will the Serie A power get what it wants from Zirkzee or is he better off being a big fish in a small pond somewhere else? Regardless, Zirkzee might have a chance to move:
Juventus have emerged as the favourites to sign Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee with the Red Devils eager to offload him and sign a replacement, as reported by TEAMtalk. There are also other Serie A clubs expressing a keen interest in the 24-year-old. Zirkzee remains determined to prove his worth at Old Trafford and demonstrate that he belongs at this level, but opportunities are now dwindling due to a rise in competition and Ruben Amorim’s tactical shifts. A move is most likely to happen in the summer but a January exit is still a possibility.
Hainer worried about BuLi exodus (Sport Bild via @iMiaSanMia)
Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer is a bit concerned over so many good players leaving the league in recent years.
“Of course, transfers of exceptional players abroad are always a loss for the Bundesliga; they are good for every league. That’s why it’s so important that the Bundesliga finds solutions together to remain internationally competitive. If we don’t address topics like internationalization, we risk an exodus of stars and promising talents – no one wants that,” said Hainer. “At FC Bayern, we bring in players like Jamal Musiala, Michael Olise, and Harry Kane to achieve sporting success. At the same time, such top stars give the entire league international appeal. That’s why the Club World Cup was so important: Anyone who was there in the USA experienced the great enthusiasm in the stadiums. And for the global perception of the Bundesliga, it was important that two German clubs, FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund, were represented. We need to be seen, otherwise we’ll be overlooked, and German football is increasingly at risk of becoming a spectator.”
