The Miami Dolphins lost running back De’Von Achane to a torn ACL on Sunday, ending the season for the team’s top rusher and a 2025 Pro Bowl selection. Miami currently has two running backs, Jaylen Wright and Ollie Gordon II, on the 53-man roster, with Jarquez Hunter and Carlos Washington, Jr., on the practice squad. Miami could look to move forward with that group, but they could also look to add a veteran free agent. But who is available?
Miami is not going to break the bank to sign someone, but
they could look to add a veteran on a minimum deal, making sure they have the depth needed to get through the season. The Dolphins’ running game is the focal point of the offensive system, and they are going to need increased depth at the position without Achane.
Kareem Hunt
The former Kansas City Chiefs running back was a Pro Bowl selection in 2017 as a rookie when he led the league in rushing yards. He finished last year with 163 carriers for 611 yards and eight touchdowns. He is not a direct replacement for Achane, but could provide another power option with Gordon, serving as a compliment to Wright’s speed.
He would not be a workload carrying running back at this point in his career, but he could be a good veteran rotation guy who can handle 10 carries a game.
Raheem Mostert
Could Miami bring back former Dolphins runner Mostert to solidify the group? Mostert has bounced around the league throughout much of his career, but had extended periods with the San Francisco 49ers (2016-2021) and Miami (2022-2024). He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2023 when he led the league in rushing touchdowns with Miami.
In 12 games with the Las Vegas Raiders last year, he recorded just 22 carries for yards. He clearly would not be the number one option, but could serve as a rotational player when Wright and Gordon need a break.
Joe Mixon
The Dolphins could look to add Mixon if he clears the medical concerns that cost him the entire 2025 season. If his foot is healthy, and that is obviously a question mark, he could still be the played that picked up 1,016 yards in 2024 with the Houston Texans.
He could be a workhorse, taking a large number of carries, but he is not going to be a direct replacement for Achane. Miami could consider him as the second option, letting Wright lead the group.
Nick Chubb
Chubb just re-signed with the Cleveland Browns to ceremony retire as a member of the team, but the Dolphins could look to sign him for the remainder of the year. Wright would likely remain the top option for Miami, but Chubb could be a more physical rotational playe with him. He might slide ahead of Gordon on the depth chart once he is fully engaged in the offense.
Chubb sustained a knee injury in 2023 and did not return to full form in 2024 or 2025. He only has 224 carries and 838 yards the last two seasons.
Cam Akers
Akers is only 27 years old, so there is potential to still land a running back with potential to reach. However, after being a second-round pick in 2020, he has played for five different teams in seven different stretches. He was at his best with his first team, the Los Angeles Rams, from 2020 through 2023, and he has a great combination of speed and power.
But, in 2025, he only appeared in three games with no carries for Seattle. He would only be a rotational player with the Dolphins, giving Wright a break when needed.
Other options
Other players Miami could consider include Dalvin Cook, Antonio Gibson, D’Onta Foreman, Ronald Jones II, Alexander Mattison, and Miles Sanders. Would you consider any of them? Was there someone not on the list you would consider?
