Y’all. I have been with Mr. Squillian since 1984. If your math is a little rusty, that is 42 years and counting. We married in 1987, so we’re still a few months shy of 40 years married, but as we both like to say, it just seems like forever.
If you’ve been married/with someone longer than about 6 months, you know that there are things your significant other (SO) does that are both endearing and infuriating. Mr. Squillian’s view on my Dawg fandom/attending home games is one of those things. Mr. Squillian is a Dawg fan,
and has been since before he met me, but he’s quite happy to sit at home on his couch, where he is in air-conditioned/heated comfort, with whatever he desires for food & drink a short walk away. He’s perfectly happy for me to attend games without him, right up to the point where I don’t have a sidekick/partner-in-crime/companion. Every week, he asks who will be accompanying me. This week, when I posted on Facebook asking if there was anyone who wanted to go with me, he reminded me that he is always happy to go with me (which is a bold-faced lie, but whatever).
If you didn’t already know it, marriage is all about compromise. And I use marriage in the definition used by Robert Fulghum: a marriage doesn’t actually begin at the altar, but rather in all the quiet, ordinary moments a couple shares beforehand. That way, it can encompass every marriage, even ones where the couple hasn’t chosen to register it with the local government. My compromise yesterday was that we didn’t leave the house in time to make the Dawg Walk, and I told Mr. Squillian that he was allowed to have as much beer as he wanted (he wanted 2). I packed sunscreen and ponchos. We needed both. We spent a good amount of time putting on and taking off the ponchos. We spent more time happily cheering on the Dawgs in their 70-20 rout of the Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers. (What is a Hilltopper?)
However, it is our intention to celebrate Georgia Bulldog Football Wins whenever and wherever they occur. The ugliness or beauty of any particular win is irrelevant for the purposes of the Winning Smart Victory Post. It is therefore my deepest honor and privilege to bring to you this week’s edition of: The Winning Smart Victory Post.
Coach Kirby Smart coached his 140th game this week for the Red & Black. He currently boasts a 119-21 record and a 0.8500 winning percentage, having carded his one hundred nineteenth win overall in the second game of the 2026 season against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers.
At the identical juncture in their careers:
Vince Dooley’s 139th game as head coach resulted in a Georgia Bulldogs win over Vandy in the sixth game of the 1976 season, giving Coach Dooley a record of 93-42-5 and a 0.6821 percentage.
Coach Mark Richt was 104-36 (0.7429) after a win over Kentucky in the 10th game of the 2011 season.
One hundred and forty games into his head coaching career Kirby Smart is fifteen games ahead of Coach Mark Richt and ahead of Coach Vince Dooley by 26 games. As of now, he is holding his own versus the two winningest coaches in Georgia Football History.
As always . . .
Go ‘Dawgs !!!!
