According to head coach Shane Steichen, while he was seen in the press box during Sunday’s win on a scooter and with a heavy cast on his reinjured left heel, there has been no change regarding Indianapolis Colts wideout Alec Pierce’s current planned means of recovery (via FOX59/CBS4’s Mike Chappell):
Rather, the plan is still for rest, rehab, and time to heal Pierce’s reinjured heel, which he suffered late in the first quarter during Week 2’s Sunday night loss against the Kansas City Chiefs.
No surgery is planned at this time, although that could certainly change if Pierce’s heel does not properly respond to the first planned course of action during the appropriate recovery timeline. There’s no need to speculate further at this time though.
Having been placed on injured reserve over the weekend, Pierce will miss at least the Colts’ next three games as well, although initial reports were that the Colts were realistically hoping for around a midseason return for Pierce—meaning he could miss closer to at least around the team’s next five games at the minimum.
Through the first two starts, and working his way back into form, Pierce had just 5 receptions for 72 total receiving yards, but as the Colts undisputed best deep threat, they’ve already felt his loss in other ways:
Having wideout Ashton Dulin (ankle) return, who’s “making progress” from his own injury, could help make up for at least some of Pierce’s absence, although no individual player on this current Colts roster is fully capable of replacing him outright—as he’s one of the best in the business regarding his elite deep threat skill-set.
