Virginia quarterback Chandler Morris left the Wake Forest contest and did not return after a slide subjected him to a late collision to the head between two defenders. The 16-9 loss was frustrating for
a variety of reasons, but ultimately, the Cavaliers are still in position to, for the most part, control their own destiny to the ACC Championship game.
The good news is that UVA may be getting their QB1 back for a pivotal contest at Duke. During Wednesday’s media availability, offensive coordinator Des Kitchings indicated that Morris will be practicing in a limited capacity later that day. This puts him on a reasonable timeline to break the opening huddle come Saturday.
The first encouraging sign was actually when Morris was able to return to the sidelines in street clothes against Wake. With more severe concussion symptoms, the medical staff may have prevented him from being exposed to such intense light and sound. Returning to physical activity a few days later reinforces that this injury is likely not long-term. Of course, for now, all we can do is speculate until Morris is either officially cleared to play or ruled out.
Despite Kitchings’ best efforts to keep his language vague, star linebacker Kam Robinson may have tipped his hand, implying that he expects to have Morris in the lineup on Saturday.
Needless to say, Virginia’s pursuit of this ACC title and College Football Playoff spot may very well be determined by the health of their quarterback. With Morris out, backup Daniel Kaelin managed just 5.2 yards per pass, while giving away the team’s first two fumbles of the season. He does not have nearly the same command for the offense nor dynamic playmaking ability that had made the Wahoos successful on that side of the ball.
We will continue to keep you updated on the implications of the quarterback situation as the week progresses.
