It’s January which means prospect season is here. MLB Pipeline has begun their top prospects series, starting with their positional breakdown. Today, we turn our attention to left handed pitching, where MLB Pipeline ranked Atlanta Braves 19-year old LHP Cam Caminiti as the No. 10 LHP in all of minor league baseball.
In his first full season on the mound Cam Caminiti was electric for the Braves.
The organization throttled his curveball usage, the pitch he claims as his best pitch, and forced him to work on his fastball and sweeper control. While one would imagine up and down results as a direct result of that, we instead got a look into the future as Cam quickly progressed throughout the season. He showed the ability to generate whiffs from his fastball, while locating in the upper third very well – a strength 18 year olds typically don’t have. Factor that in with a sweeper that he was able to gain control of against both right-handed hitters and left-handed hitters, while throwing it to both sides of the plate – and Cam set us up for a 2026 to remember.
Cam started his season a bit late, as he was returning from a small injury during the offseason, making four starts for the FCL Braves. There he showed the ability to generate whiffs with the fastball, putting up a 9.88 K/9, while walking just 1.32 batters per nine. Cam was then promoted to the Augusta GreenJackets where he continued his success. The strikeout rate rose to 11.98 K/9, however we also did see a rise in his walk rate, as it sat at 4.15 BB/9. Again, despite the walks, Cam’s ability to locate those two pitches to such a high degree resulted in him compiling a meager 2.08 ERA, and 2.74 FIP.
With pitching coordinator Paul Davis no longer with the organization, it will be interesting to see how the pitching philosophy will change – something we will be monitoring very closely. That being said, with a better understanding of what it takes to prepare and withstand a full season, there are high expectations for Cam as he enters his season full season of professional baseball, this time still at just 19 years of age.
