The Chargers lost a close one against the Seahawks on Sunday and wouldn’t you know it, but we got a little glimpse of the old Justin Herbert during the second half comeback attempt.
Once the Chargers offense was pressed for time and needed multiple scores, the whole system looked to be simplified by Mike McDaniel at the drop of a hat. No more motions. No more unique handoff techniques. It simply became Herbert sitting in the shotgun dissecting the defense while STILL being chased around on every play
(some things never change!).
The wildest thing was that the offense looked even better once it was just a bunch of backups in the game protecting him. I can’t put my finger on it, but it just felt…normal? And that’s probably a terrible thing but it certainly looked like Herbert was able to find a groove from play to play.
After suffering through the better part of the first month of the season while watching this offense, Sunday’s second half really did feel like a return to home. Herbert made hero plays, his receivers were coming through for him (even Quentin Johnston!) and they were able to move the ball consistently down the field.
That’s a silver lining if there ever was one.
And now for today’s links.
