Games. Football games. Did you know there are games on today? There are games. Lots of games. Football games. World Cup football games. Games games games games games games games. So many games.
Here’s your daily recap and upcoming matches for today.
Day 12 Recap
Argentina 2-0 Austria (Group J)
Goals: Messi (38′, 90+5′)
OK we all giggled a little when Lionel Messi missed the opening penalty kick (that’s the first time I’ve ever seen a penalty called on a double-tackle) – it is a bit funny that the greatest player and scorer in the history of the game
is statistically just bang-average when it comes to penalty kicks. Then he goes and scores a brace to put Austria away and clinch progression from Group J. Messi now has five goals in two games. I still am flabbergasted that he’s still this good at age 38. The old man’s still got it and he’s now the World Cup’s all time leading goal scorer. Ever.
France 3-0 Iraq (Group I)
Goals: Mbappe (14′, 54′), Dembele (66′)
Not even a Philadelphia thunderstorm could stop France and Kylian Mbappe, who along with Norway have clinched progression with one group stage game to play.
Norway vs. Senegal (Group I)
Goals: Holmgren Petersen (43′), Haaland (48′, 58′)
Norway hasn’t even been in a World Cup in 28 years. Now they’ve clinched progression to the knock-out stages, along with France. But this was a super fun game to watch, with both teams going for it. Erling Haaland is inevitable and now has four goals in two games. Senegal’s late goal to cut Norway’s lead to 3-2 was significant — thanks to tiebreaker rules that goal now gives Senegal an 80% chance of progressing as a third place candidate with a 1-0 win over Iraq next week.
Jordan vs. Algeria (Group J)
Goals: Al Rashdan (36′) | Benbouali (69′ – nice), Gouiri (82′)
Didn’t watch, but Nabil Bentaleb now has a chance to make the next round with Algeria. A win over Austria and they finish second, and they’re very well placed to progress in third.
