Enzo Fernández has been withdrawn from international duty and is returning to Chelsea a bit early with what the Argentina national team are calling “synovitis in his right knee”. Enzo had played most of Argentina’s 1-0 win over Venezuela on Friday.
Synovitis is the medical term for the inflammation of the membrane that lines synovial joints like knees and elbows (which have a fluid-filled cavity separating the bones in the joint). It is not a primary condition but rather a reaction to some underlying
problem, big or small. Figuring out what that problem might be is the key: if it’s just overuse or some early arthritis thing, then some rest is in order. If it’s some concern with a tendon, then that could be a bigger issue. We don’t know anything about what it might be, though it’s more likely to be the former rather than the latter.
Enzo has been very durable since his record-breaking move to Chelsea a few years ago — even last year, when he was playing through a sports hernia. This season, he’s been our only player to start every single game across all competitions. So hopefully this is nothing more than just a little warning that even Enzo needs a rest sometime.
