After England were eliminated by Argentina in a dramatic semi-final which saw the 2022 World Cup holders come back to win from behind, the press confronted Harry Kane in a post match interview. Asked if he had played his last World Cup, the Bayern Munich striker was equanimous on his prospects.
“It’s still too early to say,” Kane explained (via @iMiaSanMia). “I take it year by year and see how I feel. I love playing for England. But of course, four years is a long time.
“Then again, you can see someone
like Messi still performing at the highest level even at an older age. I honestly don’t know. Right now, I just need to process this elimination. We gave everything we had, but in the end, it wasn’t enough.”
The “we gave it everything” is a little bit suspect, if you consider the way England played after scoring their goal. In any case, Kane is unlikely to make a decision on his career any time soon. Bayern Munich are trying to extend him onto a new deal, and there will also be the EUROs two years from now. The Three Lions will see Harry Kane in white for some time yet.
