Wow is that a sad main link title. There weren’t too many folks who had realistic expectations of the Hokies pulling this one off. FSU was just too much with too many better players, and too much to save.
Sometimes you can hope so much you forget to look at what’s on the table in your hold cards. If they are bad enough it doesn’t matter what sort of high card flips on the river.
The Hokies started off the first quarter with a bit of hope as they traded 0’s for the entire first quarter. But then their fortunes changed. The missed 34-yard field goal by the ‘Noles seemed to buoy the spirits of the Hokies. And the Hokies had managed to stop the ‘Noles for a -4 to make the score 3-0. As the 2nd quarter started up.
The Hokies drove the ball steadily down the field on a really nice drive mixing different kinds of runs with Marcellous Hawkins and Drones leading the way on the drive and as he scored with nearly 6 minutes left in the quarter, the Hokies tasted a lead. It was, unfortunately, a brief few minutes of joy after the ball crossed the goal line for the Hokies.
The Seminoles ripped the ball down the field on their ensuing drive, scored a 50-yard touchdown on a pass down the middle that Tech had a blown coverage and missed tackle to enable and that was pretty much it. FSU went up 10-7, and the Hokies never again threatened to take the lead.
Over the remainder of the game, Tech would be victimized by self-inflicted errors. Kyron Drones would fumble with 5:19 left in the 3rd quarter stopped a promising drive that would have gotten the Hokies close at 14-17. But the penalties kept FSU alive when they had the ball and the lack of a real Tech passing game made it impossible to score enough points to make up the rapidly increasing difference. Tech’s 2nd half drive for a score was nice, but it really never did more than save some pride.
The Hokies 4th quarter ended with two turnovers-on-downs since they just couldn’t manage to pass the ball for much more than a few dinky dunk completions.
The final score just sort of happened the crowd in Tallahassee just cheered, and the game ended on Florida State mercifully sort of sitting on the ball as the clock ticked away.
Final Score: Hokies 14 – Seminoles 34
Next up is Senior Night at Lane and the ranked and playoff contending Miami Hurricanes visit Blacksburg.
