The Kansas City Chiefs finished the 2026 preseason 0-2-1 after a 9-9 tie with the Seattle Seahawks
on Friday night.Now general manager Brett Veach and the Chiefs’ front office will be trimming down the 91-man offseason roster to 53 players by Sunday’s deadline.

“Every year, these last few weeks are always tough,” Veach said. “You have a lot of guys that have done a lot of great things for us
over the years, and a lot of great competitions in the position groups. And as I mentioned, now it’s just a matter of kind of stacking our board like we do during the draft process, and targeting positions and needs, and creating dialog with other teams, and just trying to get our roster better.
“And I think we have a lot of talent on both sides, but we’re certainly not a finished product. And again, there’s certainly areas that you know we can improve, and we’ll continue to do that throughout the season.”

4. No longer running on empty
Kenneth Walker III didn’t play — and has barely played in the preseason — but the Chiefs’ run game continued to impress.
Emari Demercado, who had nine carries for 37 yards, Emmett Johnson, who had seven carries for 39 yards, and Brashard Smith, who finished with 16 carries for 72 yards, totaled 32 carries for 148 yards and collectively added four receptions for 25 more yards.
When the Chiefs’ offense was at its best during Eric Bieniemy’s first tenure as coordinator, the playcalling had balance, and the run game had an edge.

Remigio remains a high-floor, low-ceiling option at returner, and it seems likely he’d get back to the practice squad. We say the Chiefs go that route here while believing Smith and Allen can handle punt returns for the short term, with the option to elevate Remigio later if things don’t go well. In this scenario, Armstrong claims one of the last roster spots as a taller red zone weapon while flashing as an excellent run blocker. Armstrong led the Chiefs with five catches for 54 yards in Friday’s game.

Entering Year 14 in 2026, Travis Kelce still looks like he will be a critical part of the Chiefs’ offense. The only question in this room is whether the Chiefs keep four tight ends — and if they carry only three, who will be the third?
Kansas City is high on Jake Briningstool, but given the extra quarterback and retaining Armstrong, it’s difficult to commit to him being on the initial roster. Briningstool is likely to pass through waivers, and if he does, he’s as good a bet as any cut to land back with the Chiefs’ practice squad.

Potentially concerning observations about the cornerback room
Early on tonight, it was veteran L’Jarius Sneed who opened his preseason slate as the Chiefs’ designated nickel man. He’s a player defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is quite fond of, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that he may be in the mix for the first-string gig. With that said, the perceived fall of offseason signing Kader Kohou is alarming.
Kohou had a quiet training camp and missed time this preseason due to injury. He played moderately late into the Seahawks game alongside several players who could be cut in the next 48 hours. It’s conceivable that Spagnuolo and Co. merely wanted to get the former Miami Dolphin some additional reps, although the context is something to note. Could part of the unofficial depth chart turn out to be true?

Loop is looking to come back from last season’s nightmare finale, when his 44-yard, last-second miss ended Baltimore’s season eight months ago. After missing wide left on tries from 51 and 58 yards Friday, Loop finished the preseason 5-of-8 (62.5%).
It appeared that Ravens coach Jesse Minter, who had expressed confidence in Loop all offseason, struck a different tone after the game.

Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak was asked Friday if he planned to utilize Jeanty and Washington similarly to how he used Kenneth Walker III and Zach Charbonnet last year in Seattle.

The deadline had been Tuesday. This year, the decision to move the first game to the Wednesday after Labor Day (with two teams heading to Australia for a game the next day) prompted a shift to Sunday.
All in all, it’s a harsh process. The teams largely have become desensitized to it, because it’s a fundamental step in building a team. And the players who don’t have starting jobs set in stone understand that there’s a risk they’ll be leaving their current teams, possibly temporarily. Possibly for good.
The practice squad helps to soften the blow. And those 16 spots for 32 teams create up to 512 more jobs.

“It’s going to take a little bit of time, here,” remarked the coach, “but he’s a hard worker when it comes to these types of things. It’s just a matter of eliminating some of the pain he has. And strength — making sure he has enough strength, there.”
Rookie Kahlil Benson started at left tackle in Simmons’ place on Thursday. In three preseason games, Benson has played three different positions: both tackle spots and right guard. Reid is happy with what the rookie brings if called upon.
