Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer spoke to Tz recently on a number of topics, including who his successor should be. His ideal successor would be a legendary former player. Hainer mentioned names like Thomas Müller and Phillip Lahm as candidates, but expresses his doubts that they would be interested in the position.
“If a footballer has earned 20 million a year and should now work six days a week for a fraction of that, it becomes difficult,” Hainer said (as reported by @iMiaSanMia).
Hainer came
from the business world, not from the world of soccer — directly anyways. He worked for various international brands before becoming the president and CEO of Adidas for more than 15 years. He was familiar with the white collar grind that an executive position demands.
However, Hainer’s predecessor was Uli Hoeneß, who like Lahm and Müller, played for Bayern and Germany, and moved into the business side after retiring as a player. Lahm has also stepped into a business role since retiring as a player. He helped organize Germany’s push to host the EUROs in 2024, and then played a large role as the tournament unfolded in Germany. Müller is an intriguing option for this role. His passion and love of Bayern is unquestionable, but can we see him in this role?
What do you think about Hainer’s ideal candidates? Who else would be a good fit to replace Hainer?
