As the Minnesota Vikings ramp up the meat of the offseason program with OTAs and minicamp just days away, the roster is largely set but not necessarily finished. Often, veteran free agents remain available who can still make a meaningful impact.
The Vikings are going to depend more on younger players at DL and LB than they have in the past and might want an experienced voice to help guide those players along. With a clear need for defensive depth and some offensive versatility, there are a few intriguing
names available. Here are a few that stand out.
Joey Bosa (OLB/DE)
Bosa isn’t the impact player he once was, but he still has some left in the tank. He compiled 5 sacks and 5 forced fumbles in 15 games for the Buffalo Bills last season. He could be a fit on a short-term deal for a contender looking for pass-rush depth.
Jadeveon Clowney (DE/OLB)
Clowney is another recognizable name and a pass rusher who is still producing. He fits the mold of a Brian Flores-type player, offering positional flexibility and situational pass rush, something that has been inconsistent at times. Clowney had 8.5 sacks in 13 games for the Cowboys last season.
Deebo Samuel (WR/RB)
Samuel reconnecting with former teammate Jauan Jennings could be intriguing. He’d likely have to fight for touches in the passing game but would add explosiveness to the run game and short-area offense. He’s a perfect complement to the Vikings’ athletic receiving corps. He’s a luxury addition, but if the team wants to give its quarterback every opportunity to succeed, Samuel could be a difference maker, especially if he can recapture some of the magic from his 2021 All-Pro season.
Rasul Douglas (CB)
Douglas is a ball hawk who plays well in zone coverage. He played well for the Dolphins last season, allowing a 73.0 passer rating and a 54.5% completion percentage when targeted. The Vikings’ cornerback group is young and somewhat unproven, making Douglas a logical veteran addition.
Contending teams often make subtle roster additions to push themselves forward. Locking in a veteran depth piece now typically comes at a steep discount compared to the early free-agency frenzy. If the Vikings are serious about contending this year, adding a proven contributor or two would be a smart move.
