We’re in the throes of the deadest of dead periods on the NFL calendar, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing interesting going on. Now is prime time for the human interest aspects of NFL reporting to surface.
There’s plenty to choose from this time of year. You always hear stories about how a certain player is going to be in the best shape of his life, or how a perhaps disappointing young player is taking a new approach to this season and is going to turn things around now.
Or, sometimes, you get
interesting reporting about some of the behind-the-scenes connections that make football go. This game, as Aaron Rodgers famously said, is about people, after all.
That’s the story for our first link today, and it’s worth calling out for a bit more attention. Christian Watson’s college wide receiver coach, Noah Pauley, has landed with the Packers, giving Watson another resource on which to draw after signing a big extension this offseason.
Getting Watson to perform at the peak of his powers is a huge priority for the Packers, obviously, and anything they can do to maximize their most explosive offensive player will be huge. If getting Pauley to Green Bay helps with that, so much the better.
But even if it doesn’t, it’s an interesting development. Connections mean everything in a sporting landscape as small as the NFL; it’s not about what you know as often as it’s about who you know. And Noah Pauley knows Christian Watson. Now we find out if he knows receivers, too.
