Welcome to the Game Thread. Veterans of the Game Thread know how we do things around here, but for all you newbies we have a few rules. Our community guidelines apply and basically say be cool, no personal attacks, don’t troll and don’t swear too much.
Well, when your best player fouls out, along with two other important guys and you still somehow have a chance to send the game into overtime with a few fraction of a second left in the opponent’s arena … well that was a game that would have been considered
a moral victory last year. But this year’s Spurs squad is shooting for the playoffs, and they’re well aware that moral victories don’t count in the standings. I had a typo in my recap of the Lakers game where I said that “but you lose more from failure than from success” which is self-evidently true. But in the losing, there is learning. You have to fall flat on your face sometimes when you’re learning to run. It hurts, which is motivation not to do it that way again.
Tonight, the Spurs return home to take on the Rockets in their first NBA Cup game of the current season. The Cup is basically just for bragging rights and some extra cash for the players, but these games also count in the regular season standings, and they provide an important metric for how well the team can perform in a competitive environment.
The Rockets lost Fred VanVleet before the season started, but they’re running a hybrid backcourt with Amen Thompson running the point and with Kevin Durant taking care a lot of the ball handling duties. They are a big team and present a tough challenge for the Spurs, who will have a limited selection of bigs available tonight with Kornet still out and Olynyk questionable. It will be interesting to see if the Silver and Black can counter the opponent blitzing and double and triple teaming Victor Wembanyama on almost every play. Someone else is going to have to step up and score enough points to draw defenders away from Victor. It would be a great night for Devin Vassell to get hot from beyond the arc. Let’s watch and cheer on the Spurs to win tonight.
