If recent rumours are to be believed, then Ferran Torres is already in talks with Paris Saint-Germain regarding a possible summer switch to the French capital.
The Spaniard is in the final year of his contract at Barcelona, and as such, would be free to talk to any other club from January onwards, and move on a free transfer 12 months from now.
It isn’t clear at this point if Barca has acceded to the discussions between their striker and the Ligue 1 giants, though one could see the sense in them so
doing, if Hansi Flick still isn’t 100% sold on Ferran’s skill set and output.
Given that this is the last transfer window that the club could get anything like a reasonable transfer fee for him, too, a potential sale could make sense. There’s also the fact that Barcelona will reportedly have to shell out another €8m to Manchester City if Ferran signs a contract extension.
The question now seems to be, is selling Ferran the best option for Barcelona or should they extend his contract?
Since signing for the Catalans in 2022 for the not inconsequential fee of €55 million, Ferran has gone on to score 41 goals in 140 La Liga games and 65 goals in 207 games in all competitions. He’s also provided 22 assists.
There appears to be a general school of thought amongst culers that ‘The Shark’ misses more than he scores, and whilst that might be a perception or there is possibly some truth in it, the fact remains that his scoring record isn’t actually that bad.
He’s forever making runs into the right areas and, as often as he may have missed the target with his efforts, he hasn’t been found by team-mates after having taken up excellent striking positions either.
As we saw with Robert Lewandowski, and have seen with other strikers in the past, they all need the right kind of service to be able to thrive.
Whether Ferran has actually done enough to warrant what would effectively be a new contract (and the extra payment to Manchester City that is involved) is the real issue up for debate.
Would Barca be better off having a striker that knows his role, appreciates the ‘Barca way’ and won’t kick up a fuss if he’s not playing every minute of every game, but could perhaps improve upon his numbers, or do the club feel that going in a completely different direction may again give them a slight edge?
If they stick with Ferran and give him the benefit of the doubt, very simply, he has to deliver.
