Jake Matthews knows overturning his loss at UFC Perth will be difficult, but he’s going to try anyways.
Matthews was recently submitted in the third round by Neil Magny in a welterweight main card bout
this past Saturday at RAC Arena. However, at the end of the first round, Matthews had Magny in a tight guillotine choke, and with Magny’s arm appearing to go limp, the referee stepped in and stopped the fight just before the horn sounded. Magny immediately jumped up to protest, and the referee allowed the fight to continue, leading to another wild comeback win for the all-time welterweight wins leader.
On his Instagram page, which was collaborated on by Matthews’ management team, Matthews says the result is under appeal with the commission.
“The fight stoppage is currently under review by the state combat commission,” Matthews wrote. “It’s not easy to switch back on after a referee’s call, but we’ll leave it in their hands and see where it goes. At the end of the day, rules are rules.”
Matthews entered the bout on a three-fight win streak following victories over Phil Rowe, Francisco Prado, and Chidi Njokuani. “The Celtic Kid” is 15-8 competing for the promotion and was hoping a win over Magny could boost him towards the top-15 in a loaded welterweight division.
