When Harry Kane moved from Tottenham Hotspur to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023, some fans with foresight knew that this was coming. Others only realized it at the end of the season, when the England captain hoisted the Bundesliga top scorer award. The Torjägerkanone as it is called, happens to be, well… a cannon!
Immediately, Kane was hit with jokes comparing the cannon-shaped trophy to an Arsenal badge. In case you’re out of the loop, Arsenal are the eternal enemies of Tottenham, and the two
play the North London Derby twice every year. For Kane, both teams carry a special significance, because he actually played for the Arsenal youth all the way back in 2001.
“There’s been a lot of talk about that in recent years,” said Kane, finally commenting on the issue (via @iMiaSanMia). “But it is what it is. I can’t change the trophy, so I have to take it.”
To be fair to him, the Bundesliga top scorer award being shaped like that is a bit of an anomaly. The other top 5 leagues don’t have anything similar. In Italy, the top scorer award is called the Capocannoniere, but the trophy is not suitably cannon-shaped.
This can be chalked up to one of life’s major coincidences. It is truly funny that, the first trophy Harry Kane picked up after coming to Germany was shaped like the Arsenal badge.
