It is officially Draft Week, ladies and gentlemen. News about our Minnesota Vikings when it comes to this week’s selection meeting hasn’t exactly been abundant, but that doesn’t mean that things haven’t been happening behind the scenes. One such rumor that was popular around the start of free agency has bubbled back up this morning, courtesy of ESPN.
Adam Schefter is reporting that the Vikings and the Philadelphia Eagles could go back to exploring a trade involving edge rusher Jonathan Greenard. According
to Schefter, the Vikings have been adamant about receiving a “premium Day 2 pick” in exchange for Greenard if they were to trade him. The Eagles have three picks on Day 2 of this years Draft: a second-round pick at #54 overall, and two third-round picks at #68 and #98 overall, the latter of which is a compensatory selection that would fall right after the Vikings pick at #97 as the board sits right now.
When we asked our readers about the prospects of a Greenard trade a few weeks ago, the majority of folks were open to the idea. . .if the team could get a first-round pick in exchange. While it seems highly unlikely that Rob Brzezinski and company could pry a first-rounder away from anyone for Greenard’s services, a second-rounder might entice them to get something done.
Greenard’s cap number for the coming season, according to Over the Cap, is $22.15 million. If the Vikings did agree to a Draft Weekend deal, they would save $12.25 million against the cap while having to eat a dead money hit of $9.9 million. If they did trade him away, they would almost certainly have to use one of their picks in the first two days on a player to try to replace him, one would think.
What do you think, folks? Would a Day 2 pick in this year’s NFL Draft be enough for you to be happy with the Vikings potentially trading away Jonathan Greenard? Or would you want the Vikings to hold on to him if that would be the extent of what they could get?
