Tonight’s game is important, for multiple reasons. We’ve talked about that in the preview and in the three things to watch, but truly there are some things that transcend just playing a basketball game. Things above seeding in the ACC Tournament and how things may fall in the NCAA Tournament. In this case that is one person: Seth Trimble.
What’s funny is that two guards tied together in Tar Heel history will be in the building tonight, as RJ Davis will be able to make it to town for his rescheduled
jersey honoring ceremony. If you’ll recall, it was the difficult end to the 2024 season that convinced Davis — then the ACC Player of the Year (the reason his jersey is being honored) — to come back to UNC for one more season. That decision seemingly came at the cost of Seth Trimble, who was thought to be the third wheel with Ian Jackson also joining the squad, and Trimble announced like many that he would enter the transfer portal.
Then a remarkable thing happened — Trimble decided to stay.
Make no mistake — the agency that college players have now is long overdue, and with the long history of false promises and bad fits, the ability of a player to move to a program that fits their needs better is important. It also provides a great opportunity for overlooked recruits who maximize their chance and are able to “graduate” to a higher level program, thus increasing their professional prospects. This isn’t meant to slight any player who has decided that it was in their best interest to leave, and undoubtedly Carolina would be in real trouble this season if player transfers weren’t allowed.
Still, someone like Seth Trimble has quickly become a rarity — someone at a high major program that ends his career at the same school it started, and in doing so became a legend because of what he did while on campus. Davis was one of those — though some would argue that last season’s issues start at him — and Trimble now gets his moment in the sun after that risk he took two years ago has panned out. He’s become the leader on this squad, but not in a selfish way that has kept the ball out of the hands of more talented players. In fact, his play was clearly missed while he recovered from a broken bone earlier in the season.
There is perhaps no better sign of how much he means to his teammates and coach than a simple change from what Hubert Davis had done the last couple of seasons: the return of the Senior Speech.
Since Davis took over, the Senior Speech has not been something that the Tar Heels have done, despite some pretty memorable players leaving Carolina. Neither Armando Bacot nor RJ Davis got the speech — though Davis will get something akin to that at halftime with his jersey ceremony. After tonight’s game, Seth will get a chance to speak to the crowd in much the same way players like Luke Maye, Marcus Paige, and Bryce Johnson have done in the past.
It should make for a special night in Chapel Hill, so as the post from UNC Basketball notes, if you’re going account for traffic — leave work early! — and be in your seats by 6:40 PM. Then, after the final horn, stay seated as Seth Trimble and Elijah Davis speak to the crowd.
