Newcastle United could face a major decision on Anthony Gordon this summer, with the club open to a sale if their valuation is met amid growing interest from Europe’s top clubs.
The 25-year-old winger has attracted long-standing attention from Arsenal and Bayern Munich, while Liverpool was previously close to completing a transfer for the Magpies forward. That said, no concrete move has materialised at this stage, with the situation still described as being too early to know more about at this stage of
the transfer cycle.
From Newcastle’s perspective, Gordon remains a key asset, but the club’s stance appears clear. According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, any potential deal would depend entirely on their financial demands being satisfied, with a reported £80million fee likely required to secure his departure.
“It’s clear Arsenal want an attacker — and Gordon and Barcola have been among the players they (and most other teams at this level) have liked for a while,” Ornstein. “I’m not aware of anything firm at present.”
Interest from Bayern Munich is also firm, although no clear frontrunner has emerged in the race for Gordon’s signature yet.
“I’m not sure there truly is a favourite at this point, because it is still so early,” Ornstein reported. “Bayern’s interest is not new, and we know the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool have coveted him previously, too.”
Although Newcastle’s position suggests they are not actively pushing for a sale, they are surely going to consider offers under the right conditions, and waving goodbye to Gordon is a plausible scenario.
“Newcastle seem open to a sale — but at the right price, and if the reported £80million is true, that will not be easily achieved,” Ornstein reported.
