During the 2025 regular season, and then in the immediate aftermath of the Seattle Seahawks thumping the New England Patriots 29-13 in Super Bowl LX, there was no shortage of fans calling for the team to move on from Cooper Kupp for salary cap reasons.
The voices were loud and adamant that Kupp wasn’t worth the $17.5M cap hit his contract would carry in 2026, and his production did not justify the three-year, $45M contract he had signed in 2025. For many, it was a matter of when, not if, the Seahawks
would move on from the veteran wideout during the offseason in spite of his on-field production and the fact that the structure of his contract made it abundantly clear he would be with the team in 2026.
Just as an aside for those who were certain Kupp’s contract represents an overpay, here is a very basic plot of multi-year receiver contracts that had been signed as of this spring. Dots above the line represent overpays relative to production in the market, while dots below the line represent value signings in terms of production to average salary. It’s certainly simplistic and crude, but shows that it doesn’t take diving overly deep to come to the conclusion that Kupp’s contract represents a value in the current receiver market, even with his production far below what it was earlier in his career.
With that said, in the days since the first episode of Hard Knocks multiple fans and observers have come to the realization of what Kupp brings to the team off the field in terms of leadership and knowledge.
Brock & Salk touched on the subject the day after the premier episode aired.
Of course, this is nothing new to those who have been paying attention to Kupp throughout his career. He has long had a reputation as a hard worker and for possessing a very high football IQ. Specifically, glimpses of the level of his knowledge of the game came through from time to time, but perhaps no better moment shows the level at which he understands and processes the game better than this post game interview following a Week 13 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021.
Not only is that a highly detailed, in-depth technical answer, Kupp provided that answer in the moment without the benefit of film review. Perhaps making his recall of the play even more impressive is that he’s recalling these details in a post game interview and describing a play that took place with 11:51 left in the third quarter on the Los Angeles Rams first possession of the second half.
Interestingly, though, according to Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, Kupp provided this overly detailed and technical response specifically as an attempt to end the interview quickly.
Even if Kupp was simply using the response to bring the interview to a speedy conclusion, the reality is that his abilities to recognize, process and recall such details in real time without the benefit of film handy provide a huge amount of value to the team.
In the modern NFL, where practice time is limited and contact between players and coaches heavily restricted during the offseason, having Kupp as a de facto gives the team a huge advantage in terms of what can be accomplished during the offseason. From understanding coverages to the intricacies of route running, Kupp can fill knowledge gaps and serve as a coach during the offseason at times when coaches aren’t allowed to coach due to the limitations set in place by the current collective bargaining agreement.
Long story short, the team was never moving on from Kupp in the offseason, and the first episode of Hard Knocks shed a lot of light on why.
