The Eagles looked terrible against the Giants on Thursday night and head coach Nick Sirianni spoke to reporters after the game about the offense being too predictable, why the struggled in the second-half, and also explained why he still has confidence in his team.
He also shared his message in the locker room after two losses in four days:
“Get up. We’re going to take some time off, just get up and keep fighting. Got a lot of things to fix. Been here before. Let’s go.”
Here’s what else the head coach
had to say:
On the offense’s predictability
“I think there were some good moments in the run game today. Got ourselves behind the sticks a little bit in the second half on some of the runs there. So, we’ll look at everything right there. We know we have the guys up front to be able to do that. Obviously, we gotta do a good job putting them in positions to succeed, and then we gotta go execute. So, we’ll look at everything. You know, running a bunch of different types of schemes, we’ll look at everything — see what we’re doing well, we’ll treat this as a bye week here this weekend.”
On second-half issues
Sirianni pointed to several three-and-outs affecting their offensive struggles in the second half and then to the two turnovers — he mentioned needing to play with better fundamentals when going to the ground in reference to the fumble by A.J. Dillon.
The head coach also acknowledged that being down three scores in the fourth quarter is going to change their offensive approach — you have to go fast, try and get as many possessions as possible, hit explosives, can’t run quite as much in that scenario.
He was later asked if the in-game adjustments are at the level they need to be, and he said yes, while explaining that the Giants didn’t really do anything drastically different in the first and second half, and just reiterated that they had some short drives and turnovers. Sirianni also made note that they weren’t good enough in all three phases of the game and they didn’t coach well enough
On his confidence in a turnaround
“Guys we have in the room. Coaches we have in the room. Players we have in the room. This is life in the NFL — you’re going to have some ups, you’re going to have some downs, we’ve been here before.
Last year, obviously, we started off 4-2 as well, it was just a different way we got there. So, there is no panic on us. Its, ‘Hey, get back up, go back to work, and get better from it.’ It’s really that simple. But, love the guys that we have, love the coaches that we have.
Obviously, this group of guys and group of coaches have been to the top of the mountain, been to playoffs, and figured out ways, and I know we can figure out ways to get this thing rolling. We’ve been good at that in the past, and we gotta be good at that again.“
Other notables
- Sirianni wouldn’t say that the Giants were the tougher team on Thursday, only noting that he doesn’t think the Eagles played their brand of football in that game. He gave the Giants credit, but the Eagles didn’t play or coach to their standard.
- The head coach didn’t think Thursday’s night was a culmination of things from the first few weeks, and said that they look at each game individually and find ways to improve.
- When asked about the vibes on the sideline, Sirianni said that the players were eager to get things going, and he saw some good communication about what they were seeing, and saw guys encouraging each other. Still, he reiterated that they weren’t good enough in all three phases, and they didn’t coach well enough in Thursday’s loss.
