For the first time in the 2025 season, the American Conference has two teams ranked in the AP Top 25.
Memphis checks in at No. 23 to secure its first ranking of the year, while South Florida follows at No. 24 for its second appearance of the 2025 season.
Memphis (6-0, 2-0 American) owns the FBS’s longest win streak at 10 games and the Tigers are the only 6-0 bowl eligible team in the country. The Tigers are ranked for the second-straight season after finishing No. 24 in the final 2024 AP Poll. Currently
one spot higher than their 2024 peak, this is the program’s loftiest ranking since landing at No. 16 in the 2020 Week 2 AP Poll — an unorthodox poll which excluded Big Ten, Pac-12, Mountain West, and MAC teams due to the odd nature of the COVID-impacted nature. Besides that poll, Memphis last time ranked this high transpired at the end of 2019 when it finished No. 17 — one year before Ryan Silverfield took the head coaching reins.
South Florida (4-1, 1-0 American) is back in the rankings after a two-week hiatus. The Bulls climbed as high as No. 18 after defeating ranked Boise State and Florida in consecutive weeks to start the year. The first two games marked the program’s first time generating back-to-back ranked wins in program history, but South Florida briefly lost its status after taking a 49-12 defeat to current No. 2 Miami (FL) in Week 3. However, the Bulls bounced back with two dominant victories, reclaiming a ranking at No. 24.
The American Conference is one of five conferences with multiple teams in the AP Poll — marking the first instance of multiple American teams in the Top 25 since the final 2024 rankings (Army and Memphis). The league’s two currently-ranked teams are slated to meet in Memphis on Oct. 25. Prior to that matchup, several boxes will need to be checked for both teams to retain those numbers beside their name. The Tigers battle UAB on the road Oct. 18, while South Florida will face undefeated North Texas in Denton on Friday, Oct. 10 and subsequently host Florida Atlantic on Oct. 18.
Two undefeated American teams are also on the fringe of the rankings. 5-0 North Texas received 16 votes to garner an unofficial ranking of No. 33, while Navy earned four votes to check in at No. 37.
