Thomas Müller is one of Bayern Munich’s most popular players, and one of Germany’s most successful players as well. He was a key part of the 2014 World Cup winning team, so let’s go back down memory lane!
Thomas Müller’s role in 2014
Müller started every single one of Germany’s games in Brazil. He also scored Germany’s first goal of the tournament through a well taken penalty against Portugal. The goal would not be his last of the game, however, and he became the sixth German man in history to score a hat trick at the World Cup.
He also made sure Germany won the group with his best goal of the tournament, a nonstop curler from outside the box against the USA.
The Raumdeuter took a short break from scoring in the knockout stages, but resumed service in the semifinals in the infamous 7-1 win against Brazil. He also notched two assists in the tournament (against Ghana and Brazil), and won the Silver Boot and Silver Ball as well as the World Cup.
What is Thomas Müller doing now?
After becoming a world champion, Müller still had quite the career. He ended up winning a second treble with Bayern, eleven consecutive Bundesliga titles, and also became world champion with his boyhood club as well. After 25 years of glory in Munich, Müller left the Bundesliga for the Vancouver Whitecaps, where his trophy hunt continued. At the time of writing, Müller is officially the most decorated German player with a whopping 36 trophies…although his old friend Manuel Neuer has a chance of breaking that record.
Müller’s international career never again reached the peak it did in 2014. Other than a respectable semifinal run at Euro 2016, two out of his next three major tournaments ended in group stage exits. However, he was able to retire from the national team with dignity after contributing to Germany’s farthest tournament run in years at Euro 2024.
