Hello, my name is Jared Larson. I hail from Ames, and I graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Science in journalism and mass communication and a minor in sociology in 2020. If you think you have seen my name published online before, you are likely not mistaken. In addition to being a WRNL contributor during my college years, I was also the sports editor at the News-Review in Sigourney for the 2020-21 school year and the sportswriter at the Creston News Advertiser for 13 months.
I’m actively part of the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA). In both 2020 and 2021, I was nominated for the Football Writers Association of America Edward Aschoff Rising Star Award. The honor is awarded to the best college football journalist under the age of 34.
I bring an award-winning pedigree to WRNL. At the Iowa Newspaper Awards in February 2021, I joined News-Review graphic designer Emily Griffioen for first place best use of graphics, weekly class II division. I also received second place for best use of headlines and best sports section. At the February 2023 INAs, I received a pair of second place awards for both best sports photo and best breaking news photo. At both the 2024 and 2025 Iowa State Fair, a photo I captured was displayed.
My photography has appeared in several newspapers around the great state of Iowa including: The News-Review (Sigourney), Telegraph Herald, Creston News Advertiser, Osceola-Sentinel Tribune, Red Oak Express and Southeast Iowa Union just to name a few.
I am excited to bring pride and enthusiasm through my coverage of Iowa State athletics, past and present. If I can accomplish that, I feel I have done my job as the site manager.
