Malick Thiaw’s future at Newcastle United is expected to turn into a much bigger story than it currently is, with an expectation of growing interest from Premier League and European clubs in snatching him from Tyneside.
The Germany international only joined Newcastle from AC Milan last summer in what was the best transfer of the window for the Magpies after he became a regular in Eddie Howe’s defensive rotation.
Football Insider reported that Thiaw is already on the radar of multiple clubs, and former
Everton chief executive Keith Wyness was quoted by the outlet as saying that he believes Thiaw’s market value could rise further if he features at the World Cup.
“When you’re an agent of a young talent like that, you’re in the most enviable position because you can create all the headlines about all the interest from the other clubs and drive the negotiation up on a new contract,” Wyness said. “The oldest trick in the book that I’ve had to fight many times in football. And so, I think, we’re seeing that a bit right now, but there is genuine interest though in this kid. I think he’s got a great future.”
Wyness also referenced Thiaw’s international prospects for the upcoming tournament and how it might impact his future.
“I think he could be a mainstay in the German team as well going forward,” he said. “If he was to make the World Cup as well and perform well, again, the value would just go through the roof.”
Newcastle are facing a summer in which several key players have been linked with moves away, particularly if European qualification is not secured.
No formal offers for Thiaw have been reported for now, and this is one of the first times someone from outside the club has been heard fueling speculation about the defender’s future in Newcastle.
