What is the story about?
Barcelona
will finish Matchday 28 with a four-point lead at the top of the La Liga table thanks to a dominant 5-2 win over Sevilla in front of over 60,000 fans at Camp Nou on Sunday afternoon. The Blaugrana played a very good team game and were in full control for the entire contest, and captain Raphinha led the way with a hat-trick to secure all three points and maintain Barça’s healthy advantage at the top of the standings.
Reactions & Observations
- A game that could have been difficult was made pretty easy for Barça early on thanks to Sevilla conceding two very dumb penalties, both of which were scored by Raphinha to put the Blaugrana in front by a comfortable margin in the opening 20 minutes.
- The Catalans were in full control and could manage the game while still trying to find a third goal, which came in sensational fashion thanks to a glorious passing sequence that ended with a great finish from Dani Olmo to pretty much kill the contest.
- But Sevilla gave themselves some hope as Oso scored just before halftime, and the game wasn’t quite over at the break. Barça looked pretty good, however, and were still in a very strong position to secure the win.
- Hansi Flick took off Pedri at halftime to save him for Newcastle, and Barça made sure there would be no drama without The Wizard as Raphinha completed his hat-trick and João Cancelo scored a fantastic solo goal to make it 5-1 at the hour mark and seal the win for good.
- Flick was able to rest several of his key players after the fifth goal, but the sweetest substitution came with 10 minutes to go as Gavi returned from a six-month absence and received an amazing ovation from the crowd as the replaced Raphinha. Sevilla scored a second at the very end, but that didn’t change the mood around the stadium one bit.
- The final whistle came to end a fantastic afternoon for Barça, who dominated the entire game, scored some really good goals and looked very strong in every phase of the game. The two early penalties helped kill any real hope Sevilla had of making this a tough game, but Barça more than did their part in not allowing the visitors to get any momentum in the match and were by far the better team.
- There were several excellent individual performances, but I’d like to give a special shoutout to Xavi Espart: the teenager made his full debut, played all 90 minutes and had a very strong afternoon. He was confident and composed on the ball, was really solid defensively, and just generally knew where to be and what to do. Really good, mature stuff from the 18-year-old. One to watch.
