The Wisconsin Badgers continued their recent hot streak with a sweep over their in-state rival Marquette Golden Eagles on Wednesday, winning 25-15, 25-14, 25-18 for their fifth straight sweep.
Wisconsin, 6-1, dominated from the start, hitting .640 in the opening frame and never looking back on the road at Fiserv Forum.
The Badgers had two separate 4-0 runs in the opening set, winning four straight points to go up 10-5 before getting four more in a row after Marquette got a kill to go up 14-6. From
there, it was an easy finish for the first set, with Wisconsin comfortably winning by 10 points.
It was much of the same in the second set for the Badgers, as they scored six straight points to go up 12-3. Then, after two Marquette points, Wisconsin went on another 4-0 run to lead 16-5, ultimately closing things out with a Mimi Colyer kill to win the second set 25-14.
In the third set, Marquette got off to a better start, rattling off three consecutive points to take an early 5-4 lead. Things went back-and-forth after that and were tied up at 13 apiece before the Badgers pulled away with another 4-0 run to lead 17-13. The Golden Eagles fought back, getting three straight points and keeping it close at 19-18.
But, the Badgers had a killer ending, winning six straight points to complete their fifth straight sweep in a dominant win on the road over their in-state rivals.
It was more of a balanced effort for the Badgers on Wednesday, with Mimi Colyer leading the way at 13 kills. Grace Egan added nine kills as well, hitting .429 in the win. Additionally, Charlie Fuerbringer was effective as always, stuffing the stat sheet with 32 assists.
Wisconsin improved to 7-1 with the sweep and now faces another big challenge this weekend, taking on the No. 16 Florida Gators at the Kohl Center on Sunday, with first serve set for 12:00 p.m.
