49ers add former NFL head coach Matt Eberflus to defensive staff (paywall)
“Eberflus finished three of his four seasons in Indianapolis with a top-10 scoring defense. But following the abrupt trade of Cowboys star edge rusher Micah Parsons, he ended his one-and-done stint in Dallas with a unit that ranked dead last in that category, allowing 30.1 points per game.”
Free-agent running backs 49ers could target to fill void at the position “Gainwell enters his sixth NFL season. He is not an every-down
back, which means he is not going to command a big-money contract. His ability to make plays out of the backfield would make him an ideal backup to McCaffrey.”
Report: 49ers have an interest in Alec Pierce and Romeo Doubs
“Breer wrote. “Along those lines, I’ve heard they have an interest in both Alec Pierce and Romeo Doubs on the free-agent market. And failing that, there’s a deep class in the draft, with Indiana’s Omar Cooper Jr. sticking out as a nice fit for San Francisco.”
Report: 49ers ‘monitoring’ Trey Hendrickson situation
“As far as Trey Hendrickson, they are going to be one of the teams that at the very least is in the conversation, they’re monitoring the situation,” Barrows said, via KNBR. “… he’s only a year removed from leading the league in sacks, his market will be pretty good….Maxx Crosby is going to get a lot of attention, there could be as many as 20 teams in that,” Barrows said. “… it could be a situation where the compensation gets out of hand, the 49ers can’t match, they don’t have a great first-round pick.”
49ers expected to hire Angel Matute to Kyle Shanahan’s coaching staff
“”[Matute] was key in Kent State cutting its sacks allowed total from 43 in 2024 to 27 last season,” Zenitz wrote. “Also helped the team improve its rushing average by 20 yards per game.” Zenitz did not specify Matute’s role on the 49ers’ staff under head coach Kyle Shanahan. However, the team recently promoted Cameron Clemmons from assistant offensive line coach to tight ends coach. The 49ers have also reportedly hired Roman Sapolu, the son of franchise great Jesse Sapolu, to the coaching staff.
Matute began his coaching career with the University of Missouri in 2021 as an offensive assistant. He later participated in the 49ers’ Bill Walsh NFL Diversity Coaching Fellowship in 2024 and, that same year, served as an offensive analyst and assistant offensive line coach at Purdue.”
49ers held pre-draft meeting with Oregon OL Alex Harkey
“Originally a tight end at the junior college level, Harkey later transitioned to the offensive line. In 2025, he started every game at right tackle for Oregon.
Analytics from Pro Football Focus show that Harkey’s most productive season came in 2024 while at Texas State. That year, he earned an 85.8 overall offensive grade, an 84.5 run-blocking grade, and a 79.3 pass-blocking grade—each a career high.”
