With the signing of 20-year-old Jérémy Jacquet from Rennes in a deal that could rise to £60M with add-ons, Liverpool have signed one of the most promising young centre halves in Europe. It’s a steep price to pay for a young player with 55 senior appearances, but one that speaks to just how highly rated Jacquet is.
Unfortunately for the Reds, he won’t arrive in time to help the club through their current defensive injury crisis, with Rennes only willing to agree a deal if the player remained at the Ligue
1 club through the 2025-26 season, but it seems nearly certain the France youth international is seen as a potential day one starter for when he does arrive ahead of next season.
“I am honoured to sign for Liverpool, one of the greatest football institutions in the world,” Jacquet said following the completion of his buy-and-loan deal that saw him fly into Liverpool on transfer deadline day to undergo a club medical and sign his contract before heading back to Rennes on loan for the rest of the season.
“It was also very important for me to finish my time in red and black on a high, at my boyhood club, the club of my heart. I’m approaching this second half of the season with the desire to experience some great moments with my teammates and the fans.”
