The offseason is in full swing, and the process of retooling the Yankees’ roster has begun. The team has picked up their option on left-handed reliever Tim Hill, extended a qualifying offer to outfielder
Trent Grisham, and will soon have to make some 40-man roster decisions with the Rule 5 Draft coming up on the horizon. All together, these are just the little things to manage before the meat and potatoes of the winter get served, but they still serve as an interesting opening dish.
The decision to give the QO to Grisham in particular has been an interesting one, as it was heavily debated during the season whether they would or not. It’s hard to allow an outfielder that blossomed into a 30+ homer bat to just walk for free, even if he doesn’t end up in your plans for 2026 and beyond, but even though it’s a one-year pact if he accepts $22 million will be a major pay raise and eat into a lot of the money that the Yankees could spend this offseason. Should the team have extended the offer to Grisham, and are they hoping he declines just for the compensation pick? Will he factor into their outfield negotiations if he hits the open market? What are the next steps that we’ll see the team commit to before we get into the full-on free agent negotiating?
