With just three regular-season games left before the ACC Tournament, the North Carolina Tar Heels look to extend their perfect home record and build momentum heading into March.
This is the first 16-0 start in the Smith Center, and a win tonight will tie the 17-win record from the 2011-12 season.
On the opposing bench, Virginia Tech has two Quad 1 opportunities left in the regular season. The Hokies are on the NCAA Tournament bubble and need a win tonight in Chapel Hill or next Saturday in Charlottesville
to boost their resume.
UNC holds a commanding 74-17 all-time record against Virginia Tech, including 21-7 since VT joined the ACC in 2004.
The Tar Heels are 34-6 in Chapel Hill, including 9-1 in the Smith Center, and have won nine straight home games against the Hokies. VT is 3-5 on the road this season, and has not won in Chapel Hill since 2007.
Despite Virginia Tech’s struggles in the Smith Center, the Hokies cannot be overlooked. VT has been inconsistent this season. After beating a ranked Virginia team by 10, Virginia Tech lost the next two to Wake Forest and Stanford. A win four games ago on the road versus ranked Clemson was followed by losses to Florida State and Miami.
The Hokies have two good players in the front court, Amani Hansberry and Tobi Lawal, and rank sixth in the ACC in three-point shooting percentage.
Once again, Carolina is without leading scorer and rebounder Caleb Wilson, who is missing his fifth straight game.
Can the Tar Heels earn the win and solidify a spot in the top four in the conference?
