The Wisconsin Badgers added a special teams player in the transfer portal, landing Toledo long snapper James Roe on Tuesday following an official visit, he announced on X.
Roe, a sophomore in 2025, was
ranked as a 4.5-star long snapper by Kohl’s Snapping coming out of high school. He started all 13 games as a freshman in 2024 and all 13 games as a sophomore this season.
Wisconsin was in need of a new long snapper as 2025 starter Nick Levy is out of eligibility. The Badgers have been going after long snappers in the transfer portal over the past few years, landing Cayson Pfeiffer from Cincinnati the year before.
Roe will have two years of eligibility at Wisconsin and is expected to be on scholarship this season as the team’s starter. Currently, Wisconsin is slated to have returners Sean West and Gavin Lahm at punter and kicker, respectively, this year. Both entered the 2025 season as backups, but got opportunities as the starters struggled.
Wisconsin’s original starting punter, Atticus Bertrams, entered the transfer portal and is heading to UCF for his senior season. Their starting kicker, Nathanial Vakos, is out of eligibility. Lahm has never kicked a field goal in his career and could not win the starting job away from Vakos, so we’ll see if that remains the status quo or if Wisconsin looks for a kicker in the portal.
But, they have a new long snapper for 2025 with Toledo’s James Roe.
