Carlos Ulberg is currently ranked No. 3 in the light heavyweight division and likely one victory away from securing a 205-pound title shot. The means to that end is a dominant performance against former light heavyweight title challenger Dominick Reyes in the UFC Perth main event this Sat. (Sept. 27) in Australia.
Reyes has his own championship goals for this weekend’s headliner.
“He’s done himself very well to get himself where he is,” Ulberg told MMA Junkie about Reyes. “I do pay my respects to him.
Respect is given where it’s due. Going in there, that’s all I have for him, is the respect. Hopefully, after the fight, we get to share a beer or something.”
They can also go dancing.
“(I’m) technical, but when it comes to the nitty gritty, I know that I have heart within me,” Ulberg added. “If it comes down to the five rounders and we have to throw some leather and there’s a lot of blood and missing teeth, then so be it. We’ll have to make the kill.”
The “kill” would certainly stand in contrast to this tepid performance.
Ulberg, 34, graduated Dana White’s “Contender Series” back in late 2020 and has since compiled an 8-1 record while also putting together an impressive seven-fight win streak. Assuming we have a definitive finish at UFC 320 next month in Las Vegas, Ulberg could face the winner of Magomed Ankalaev vs. Alex Pereira.
