Tom Aspinall has said many times that he believes he can beat Jon Jones. Daniel Cormier in his prime? Maybe not.
In a new interview on the ShxtsNGigs podcast, Aspinall was asked if there was a fighter in the history of his weight class who he felt could beat him. He didn’t hesitate to drop former UFC champ champ Daniel Cormier’s name.
“You know DC, Daniel Cormier?” Aspinall asked. “Yeah, peak DC has the worst style for me ever.”
“He’s short, I’ve said this to his face as well, short guy who just keeps walking forward, changing levels in between grappling punches,” Aspinall continued. “He can knock you out. He can take you down. He’s got cardio for days. For my style, he’s a nightmare.”
Asked how he came up with that answer so quick, Aspinall admitted it was something he’d considered before.
“I thought about it. He was a beast. DC was unreal,” he said.
Cormier is another fighter who doesn’t get the recognition he deserves from more recent fans of the sport, possibly because he ended his career off two bad losses to Stipe Miocic. But Cormier before he started having issues with his back was a sight to behold.
He won the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix with ease, and then cut through everyone not named Jon Jones during his peak in the UFC. He had the wrestling, he had the striking, and he had the submission defense to make him a tall task for anyone to face.
Props to Tom Aspinall for giving him his flowers, because MMA fans should never forget what a bad man “DC” was a decade ago.
