After dialing down the intensity on Monday, the New England Patriots are set to up the tempo again entering their fourth practice of this year’s training camp. Tuesday’s session projects as another full-speed affair, at least as far as non-padded practices allow. And frankly, with the first off-day of the summer coming up, the Patriots have every reason to show some increased intensity.
With that said, let’s dive into Day 4.
Schedule
The Patriots’ fourth training camp practice of the year will again take place
on the fields behind Gillette Stadium. The session is free and open for the general public to attend.
- 9:15 a.m. ET: Gates open
- 10:15 a.m. ET: Practice
- ca. 12:15 p.m. ET: Player availability (RB Rhamondre Stevenson, WR Kyle Williams, LG Alijah Vera-Tucker, LB Christian Elliss, LB K.J. Britt, CB Christian Gonzalez)
As always, of course, the schedule is tentative and subject to change. For more information, please visit our Pats Pulpit Training Camp Guide.
Story of the day
Can Drake Maye bounce back? The Patriots’ pass defense deserves plenty of credit for a strong outing during the last competitive practice on Sunday, but the team’s starting quarterback also had to go through his fair share of rough patches. His accuracy in particular was off on multiple passes, including a high throw intended for A.J. Brown that was eventually picked off by Craig Woodson.
New England needs its starting quarterback playing at a high level, and Sunday he was spotty in that regard. Maye has shown a short memory on multiple occasions in the past, and — with yesterday’s walkthrough as a buffer of sorts — he will need to do so again to get his unit back on top in the intra-team competition.
Injuries to monitor
NFI: RB Terrell Jennings, S Brenden Schooler
PUP: TE C.J. Dippre, ED Harold Landry III, ED Gabe Jacas
With Reggie Gilliam returning on Monday after a one-day absence, the Patriots had all available players on the field. The only absentees were the five players on the physically unable to perform and non-football injury lists. All five of them can return off those lists and start practicing at any point.
Players to watch
RB Lan Larison: So far this summer, the Patriots have used a clear pecking order at running back: Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson are at the top with Larison as the third option. However, the last time we saw the running backs perform at a non-walkthrough speed, rookie Jam Miller had more notable plays. Can Larison fight back on Tuesday to keep the upper hand in the competition?
WR Kyle Williams: Three days into training camp, the Patriots’ second-year wide receiver has been quiet — to a point where he seems to find himself in a competition with fellow sophomore Efton Chism for the seventh spot on the depth chart. It is too early to sound the alarm, but the former third-round draft pick needs to find a way to get more heavily involved particularly during competitive sessions such as Tuesday’s..
OT Caleb Lomu: New England’s first-round draft pick has been heavily involved with the starting offense, both as a right tackle replacement for Morgan Moses and a jumbo tight end. During the last fully-competitive practice on Sunday, he spent significant time with the starters at right tackle to spell Moses and it will be fascinating to see how his role develops alongside Moses. Tuesday should be the next chance for him to leave this mark.
Third safety: On the first day of training camp, Mike Brown filled that role. On the second day, it was Dell Pettus. Yesterday, the Patriots gave John Saunders Jr. the honors. So, who will it be on Tuesday? Undrafted rookie Peter Manuma, the next logical name in the group, or somebody else who could then be regard the frontrunner for that particular spot on the depth chart?
