It’s never boring following the Cleveland Browns quarterback controversy.
The major update is that Joe Flacco, old and washed, has lost the QB job and the Browns will turn to rookie Dillon Gabriel, the third round pick from Oregon.
Gabriel is a generous 6’0, left-handed, unathletic, and will do his best to lift a challenged Cleveland offense. He did well last year in Eugene, winning Big Ten Player of the Year after throwing for 3,857 yards and 30 touchdowns. But his team was loaded and it was his sixth
year (!) as college starter.
The odds are against Gabriel, who becomes the 41st starting QB since the Browns were reestablished in 1999. He will debut in Cleveland’s London fixture against a Brian Flores-coached Vikings, then travel to Pittsburgh, New England and New York in the next weeks in a series challenging inter-conference games.
If he fails to impress, Shedeur Sanders will be in line to become QB #42. Sanders dazzled in his two years at Colorado, but tumbled to the 5th round of the NFL Draft after telling teams he wouldn’t play for them unless he could start. Cleveland is a graveyard for QBs, but it’s a land of opportunity for Shedeur — as long as he doesn’t do anything stupid.
The latest (not major) update is that Shedeur did something stupid. Cleveland reports attempted to ask Shedeur for his comments on the aforementioned news, only for him to pantomime his answers, mouthing along without making any sounds.
Maybe the Browns have a talk with him, or maybe the Browns just move on from this and give him a chance if and when Gabriel struggles. Regardless, Shedeur is doing nothing to answer questions about his humility and maturity.
